BZ is a naval term that means ‘well done’. It comes from the Bravo and Zulu nautical signal flags being flown together.

I love to celebrate the achievements of the cadets, volunteers and units who are embracing our Future Ready Strategy and inspiring others to do the same. This issue, I’m shining a spotlight on Burnham-on-Sea Unit.

A helping hand

In the spring, Area Officer Cdr Gary Mills RN presented Burnham’s CO Lt (SCC) Dom Gregory RNR and Petty Officer (SCC) Corey Hayes with a Captain’s Commendation. It was in recognition of the duo’s exceptional effort in reaching another unit’s stranded minibus and getting the cadets to their destination.

Pedal power

10 cadets and two volunteers from Burnham completed an epic sponsored bike ride earlier this year. The 32-mile fundraising adventure was suggested by one of the unit’s youngest cadets, Leading Junior Cadet Aidan, and raised over £2,000 for the unit.

Team players

OC Felicity was part of the first Sea Cadets team in many years to finish the Ten Tors Challenge in Dartmoor. CPO (SCC) Joanne Sidwell organised a fantastic Gold DofE paddling expedition for the whole district. And their newest cadet afloat instructors have been helping other units to get on the
water for the first time.
