Course spotlight: Physical Training
We bring you the run down on a new Physical Training syllabus for sea cadets that can be delivered at all units

We’re excited to present the new Physical Training (PT) syllabus for all sea cadets. These sessions were created collaboratively by the Royal Marines Cadets, National Support Centre and the PT branch, and were piloted by detachments across the country. The syllabus focuses on taking on challenges, setting individualised goals, and improving physical and emotional wellbeing. The exercises are linked to the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Action Fitness Health Related Activity and adapted for our cadets. Here’s what you need to know…
Who can take part?
Since October 2024, modules have been delivered in RMC detachments and are now rolling out to Sea Cadets as part of the Recreational Activity offer in the CTP. They can be delivered in various ways, such as individual sessions during weekly CTP or CTS delivery, joint Blue/Green sessions, or as a PT Day involving many cadets.
Who can run the sessions?
Instructors are not required to be PT Specialisation Instructors but must complete a 30-minute online PT health and safety course to deliver the sessions confidently and safely.

Why should cadets do PT?
Physical Training offers numerous benefits, including improved physical and mental health, new skills in setting targets and goals, and enhancing the Sea Cadets Experience. Being active supports young people’s overall wellbeing and may aid their engagement with sports, activities and work opportunities throughout their lives.
Where can cadets find out more?
Cadets can find more information through Programmes Online, where they can see all objectives and sessions available. Each session has Action Bank cards with exercise ideas that can be modified to suit individual cadet capabilities, ensuring everyone benefits from the training.
What volunteers are saying about the new PT syllabus…
“I’m a qualified PT instructor and really enjoyed this course. I will be recommending it to my peers.”
“Delighted that this course has been created, so we can provide local PT at the unit.”
“As a swimming teacher, anything that gets cadets more active is good. It will also benefit adult health going forward.”
