Passing the helm
A fond farewell to Martin Coles CBE – and a warm welcome to our new CEO

After 15 years of dedicated leadership, Martin Coles CBE is stepping down as CEO of Marine Society and Sea Cadets (MSSC), leaving behind an incredible legacy of opportunity, growth and adventure for cadets and volunteers alike. Martin will remain in post until 16 May, with Guy Holloway joining as CEO-designate on 1 May, allowing for a seamless handover.
Martin’s passion for ensuring that every young person could experience the life-changing benefits of Sea Cadets has shaped the organisation into what it is today. Under his tenure, Sea Cadets has become fully safe and inclusive, with modern safety, safeguarding and inclusion systems in place. He prioritised ‘putting the sea back into Sea Cadets’, overseeing significant investment in a new fleet of boats, ships, facilities and equipment.
Martin also led to the implementation of the Sea Cadets Experience framework, which now underpins all activities, clearly articulating the organisation’s purpose: launching young people for life. He championed the voice of cadets and has driven digital advancements as well as improved support and systems for volunteers. Martin’s commitment has left a lasting impact, and we wish him fair winds and following seas on his next voyage.

As we get ready to say goodbye to Martin, we will be welcoming our new CEO, Guy Holloway, who will join us from his role as Interim Chief Executive for the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts. With nearly 20 years of experience in the charity sector, Guy has dedicated his career to empowering young people, from supporting girls’ education to tackling childhood malnutrition in Africa.
Growing up in Indonesia, Guy developed a love for adventure, becoming an accomplished scuba diver. One of his most exciting experiences was sailing on a traditional pinisi boat to see Komodo dragons in the wild. While he may not be a sailing expert just yet, he’s eager to learn and ready to embrace the Sea Cadets’ spirit of challenge and teamwork.

Guy’s first priority will be to connect with cadets, volunteers and supporters, ensuring that Sea Cadets continues to inspire and equip young people for success. He is excited to build on Martin’s legacy and continue to lead the organisation into a bright future.
Thank you, Martin, for everything you’ve done. And from 16 May, welcome aboard, Guy – we’re excited for the journey ahead! Look out for the next issue of The Sea Cadet magazine, where we’ll feature a full fact file on our new CEO.
